Meet the Doula Team

The Genesis doula team includes our Genesis pelvic floor therapists: Lakin Vaughn, MOT, OTR and Dr. Jen Holt, PT, DPT.

Both Lakin & Jen are certified doulas, and have a passion for serving women through pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. Being pelvic floor therapists gives them a special perspective to the pelvis and body throughout labor and birth. Lakin & Jen serve throughout the DFW metroplex.

Dr. Jen Holt

Physical Therapist & Birth Doula

Dr. Jen Holt received her Bachelors in Exercise Science and her Doctorate of Physical Therapy from Carroll University in Waukesha, WI. Through continuing education coursework, she has a specialized certification for Pregnancy and Postpartum Physical Therapy. Ultimately, she loves teaching all women about their body and what’s normal, and building great relationships with her patients.

Lakin Vaughn

Occupational Therapist & Birth Doula

Lakin received her Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology, with minors in psychology and business, from Abilene Christian University. She went on to earn her Master of Science in Occupational Therapy at the University of Texas Medical Branch. After her own pregnancy and the birth of her son, she became passionate about helping women due to the serious gap in care regarding pelvic health.  Lakin has worked largely in acute care where she is an advocate for women’s health, and has implemented post-partum pelvic floor therapy as part of the routine hospital stay. She also teaches birth prep classes to better help prepare women for both labor and the post-partum journey. She is excited to be able to expand her experience into helping women outside of the hospital, as well.  Lakin is also a certified birth doula!

So what is a birth doula?

A birth doula is a person who provides emotional, physical, spiritual, and educational support through pregnancy, labor/birth, and postpartum.

Benefits of a Birth Doula

  •  Evidence-based educational support with extensive knowledge of the birth process from both a natural and more medical approach
  • Labor comfort support
  • Extra support person and an extra set of hands
  • Emotional support through pregnancy, labor/birth, & postpartum
  • Provides support to the mom’s partner

What the research says about doula support during labor:

  • Lower risk of cesarean (and higher likelihood of VBAC)
  • Less medical interventions
  • Shorter labor time
  • Higher birth satisfaction
  • Less likely to experience a birth complication (either mom or baby)
  • More likely to initiate breastfeeding
  • Less likely to have a low birth weight baby

What our patients are saying....

"Hiring a doula through Genesis was a very last minute decision but I'm so glad I did. Many people advised that a doula isn't needed when getting an epidural but I completely disagree. My induction took 30+ hours from start to finish and Jen was so helpful with keeping me moving, managing contraction pain prior to epidural, and coaching me and my support partners through pushing. I love that all the Genesis team has a medical background themselves."

"We are so grateful to have had Lakin as our doula and with us throughout pregnancy, the birth process, and postpartum. She was responsive and supportive at all hours and with all updates as we got closer to our baby girl’s due date. When we were in labor at the hospital, she was coaching me on how to help labor progress and she coached my husband on ways to support me through the pain. She was hands on to help with my pain relief and to give my husband a break when needed. She was a lovely addition to the birth team and a strong advocate for our birth wishes. She really helped us have the best birth experience we could have had and we are so grateful for her and our continued relationship! "

"Jen (and Lakin!) were so amazing to have as doulas. I felt incredibly cared for & supported before, during, and after delivery. I had a really anxiety inducing pregnancy and an unexpectedly early labor and delivery so things often felt a bit scary and I felt like having doulas made all the difference in keeping anxiety to a minimum, helping me making informed choices, and generally making what could have been a really scary experience a positive one! I seriously don’t know what I would have done without the amazing care I received!"
