Frequently Asked Questions
What can I expect at a typical appointment?
Every appointment will be 100% one-on-one with your therapist. You can expect to spend 60-90 minutes at your initial evaluation, and 45-60 minutes at your follow up visits. Each session will include a combination of assessment, manual therapy, therapeutic exercise, neuromuscular re-education, and patient education on how to supplement treatment while at home.
How many visits will it take?
This will vary greatly from person to person, depending on what you’re being treated for, how long you’ve been dealing with the issue, what your specific goals are, as well as other factors that will play a role in your recovery. We ask that, at minimum, you plan for a comprehensive evaluation followed by at least 2-3 follow up sessions. However, for more complex issues, or more challenging goals you will likely benefit from more sessions with your therapist to ensure full resolution of symptoms for both the short and long term. Your therapist will be able to give you a more personalized idea at your evaluation.
Do I need a referral from my Physician or Midwife?
NO! Texas is now a limited direct-access state for physical therapy. This means you no longer need a referral to get started with pelvic floor therapy! This saves you valuable time and money, as well as avoids unnecessary diagnostic testing and medications. The sooner you receive treatment for an injury or dysfunction, the faster you will get well! After we complete your initial evaluation, we will write up a Plan of Care and & our Plan of Care Coordinator will send it to your current provider (typically your Family Doctor, OBGYN, Midwife or Chiropractor) so they can be up to date on your treatments, or if you plan to file with your OON insurance, get a signature.
Do you accept insurance?
Genesis PT & Wellness is an out-of-network practice. By being out of network with insurance companies, we are able to provide superior, one-on-one care that is unmatched by anyone else in the Metroplex. When you are in-network, you are greatly limited in what services you can provide based solely on what insurance will reimburse you for. Insurance puts a cap on how much money they will pay, and limits the amount of time you can spend with your patients.
By being an out-of-network provider, Genesis PT & Wellness is able to spend one-on-one time with you each and every visit for the entirety of the visit, and provide the superior care and services you need to improve. This way, you can spend significantly less time attending therapy because you improve much more quickly. We work for PATIENTS not insurance companies!
We are also more than happy to provide you with the information you need to file with your insurance company for potential out-of-network reimbursement. If you plan to file for reimbursement it is important you have a current provider we can send your Plan of Care to so that they can sign & return it to us. Don’t worry – our Plan of Care Coordinator will handle this for you! Then at your request, we will provide you with a Super Bill after each visit that you can simply mail off to your insurance company for potential out-of-network reimbursement or to be applied toward your deductible.
Do you take Medicare?
We are not participating Medicare providers. If you are a Medicare beneficiary, you are welcome to see us for Wellness Services.
Is internal pelvic floor work required?
While the internal exam/manual therapy can tell us a lot about your pelvic floor muscles, our therapists have plenty of knowledge, exercises, and other tools we can use to help if internal work is not a good option for you. We value informed consent first and foremost and you, the patient, are always in control!
What does the internal pelvic floor work involve?
After thorough explanation & getting your consent, the exam/treatment can be completed either vaginally or rectally. Our goals with either are to assess for muscle tension, coordination/function, and any asymmetries that may be at play from your left PF muscles to the right PF muscles. This is not your typical GYNO exam! It involves use of 1-2 gloved & lubricated finger(s), that aims to be non-painful as we talk you through the entirety of what we are doing & more importantly getting your feedback on how it is feeling! Your perception of the feeling of pressure to the muscle(s) gives us information about what the issue may be coming from (nerves, muscle, other soft tissues, etc).
What do I wear to my therapy appointment?
Something that is comfortable to move around/exercise in – skirts & dresses are sometimes difficult to maneuver around, but it can be done if you forget! Shoes do not matter as much, as we will probably have you barefoot often!
Am I able to come to my therapy appointment if I’m on my period?
YES! There are plenty of effective things we can still do during your session that do not involve internal PF work, if you do not want internal work while on your period. However, our therapists are professional & comfortable with performing the internal PF work while menstruation is occurring if warranted.
Do you offer a military discount?
YES! We offer 15% off your initial service to active-duty, retired, and veteran members of the U.S. military and their spouses! Be sure to mention you are military when you book your initial session!
